■ Title: Rational Design of Antibiotic Treatment Plans

■ Abstract : We present work with Portia Mira, Kristina Crona, Devin Greene, Juan Meza and Miriam Barlow, aimed at developing antibiotic treatment plans that can reverse the evolution of antibiotic resistance. The Barlow lab at UC Merced generated adaptive landscapes for 16 genotypes of the TEM beta-lactamase that vary from the wild type genotype TEM-1 through all combinations of four amino acid substitutions, and determined the growth rate of each genotype when treated with each of 15 beta-lactam antibiotics. Using growth rates for fitness in two models from population genetics, we computed the probability of each amino acid substitution in each beta-lactam treatment, and we searched through the 15 treatments for substitution paths leading from each of the 16 genotypes back to TEM-1. We identified treatment paths with the highest probabilities of returning TEM to the wild type state, thus offering promise for reversing the evolution of resistance to antibiotics. This lecture highlights the mathematics in this project.

 

Two-days Seminar on Applied Algebraic Geometry

Introduction  

This two-day seminar is a preparation seminar for the 2015 SIAM Conference on Applied Algebraic Geometry (August 3-7).  We are going to introduce the applications of algebraic geometry from different aspects and prepare everyone for the related mini-symposiums in the SIAM conference.

This summer graduate school will take place at the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Daejeon, South Korea.  The purpose of this summer school is to introduce some of the basic ideas and methods of random matrix theory to graduate students.  In particular there will be three lecture series on random matrix theory from three different perspectives: from the view points of the integrable structures, the moment method, and the Stieltjes transorm technique.  In addition to the lectures, there will be discussion sessions, and the students will also have plenty of time to interact with the lecturers and with other students.

제목: 소셜 빅데이터 분석을 통한 일상의 관찰

소셜 미디어를 통한 정보의 공유, 여론의 형성과 확산 등은 더 이상 특별한 현상이 아니며 우리의 일상 생활에 깊이 파고 들어 사람들의 사고와 행동에 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 다음소프트에서는 자연언어 처리와 텍스트 마이닝 기술, 그리고 최근에 급부상한 빅데이터 처리 기법을 접목하여 소셜 빅 데이터 분석 플랫폼을 구축하고 기업 및 공공기관을 위한 서비스를 제공하고 있다. 이 강연에서는 다음소프트의 소셜 빅데이터 분석의 방법과 실제 응용 사례를 소개한다.

NIMS지원 암호여름학교의 개최는 암호 및 정보보호에 관심을 가지는 수학자, 공학자, 학생들, 연구원들 등의 암호 연구 저 변을 확대하는데 많은 도움을 줄 것이다. 강연을 해줄 초빙연사들은 관련 분야의 알기 쉬운 내용 소개, 새로운 연구결과, 그 리고 유망한 연구 주제를 소개함으로써 현대 암호연구의 이해를 도모하게 할 것이며 대학원생 및 젊은 연구자들에게 연구교 류의 장을 제공함으로 그들이 향후 활발한 연구를 하여 사회에 보탬이 되는 주요 연구 인력으로 성장해나가는 기반을 마련할 것이다. 더불어 학문후속세대인 대학원생들이 학생시절부터 일찍 자신들의 연구주제에 대한 의견을 교환하고 연구 협력할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 등 여러 가지 긍정적인 파급효과를 가져올 것이다.

매듭의 관련한 전 분야의 연구주제를 다루고자 하며, 매듭이론과 관련된 대수적 구조 특히 Quandle을 이용한 매듭이나 곡면매듭의 연구는 저차원 다양체의 연구에 관심을 두고자 한다. 또한 최근 새롭게 조명받고 있는 가상매듭의 이론과 관련된 분야에도 집중할 예정이다.
국내학자들이 가상매듭이나 Qunadle 관련이론에 대한 정보를 학술회의나 관련세미나를 통하여 단편적으로 접할 수는 있으나 짧은 시간동안 원론적인 내용과 그들의 최신 결과의 소개에 거치는 경우가 대부분이어서 기대를 충족시키지 못하고 있다.
이번 Summer School를 통하여 S. Carter, S. Kamada 등 콴들구조의 전문가들과 Manturov, Kauffmann 등 가상매듭의 전문가들을 초빙함으로서 관련 지식과 최근 연구정보를 최신 토픽까지 일관되게 관련 지식과 연구 방법을 습득하고자 하며, 우리나라의 quadle 구조와 그 호모로지론을 이용한 3차원 및 4차원다양체의 연구 및 가상매듭의 연구를 본격적으로 시작할 수 있는 발판을 마련하고자 한다.
또한 매듭이나 곡면매듭의 연구는 위상수학 특히 저차원 다양체의 연구의 핵심 수단중 하나로서 그 결과들은 수학의 많은 분야 뿐만 아니라 물리의 양자역학, 생명공학의 DNA연구, 화학의 고분자 화학 등 건의 모든 분야에 광범위 하게 이용되고 있는 추세이다. 듭이론의 연구결과들을 이러한 분야에 응용할 수 있는 방법에 대한 논의도 이루어 질 것이다.

2015년 6월에 1주간 개최할 예정인 제 3회 Summer school의 주제는 Interacting particle systems and random matrices이다. 제 1회 주제는 Stochastic analysis and its potential theory였고 제 2회 주제는 Stochastic partial differential equation였다. 3회에 다룰 내용은 한층 더 확률론의 응용을 다룬다고 볼 수 있다. 확률론 이론이 어떻게 구체적으로 자연현상을 설명하는 데 쓰이는지 토론하게 될 것이다.
좀 더 구체적으로 여름학교에서 다룰 주제를 소개하겠다.

1.Phase Transitions, Critical Phenomena, and the Renormalisation Group a course by David Brydges and Gordon Slade

The subject of phase transitions and critical phenomena in physics has had a major influence on mathematics for over half a century, especially in probability theory but also in other disciplines. In fact the influence on mathematics is now greater than ever before.

The subject is mainly focussed on the study of various specific models.
This course of 16-20 hours will include an introduction to some of the models of greatest interest: percolation, the Ising and $|varphi|^4$ spin models, and models of self-avoiding walks. One of the fascinating features of these models is their dependence on the spatial dimension, and the course will provide a survey of what is rigorously known, and of what is predicted but not yet rigorously known,in the different dimensions. Emphasis will be placed on the existence of phase transitions and the accompanying universal critical behaviour, characterised by universal critical exponents. Exact solutions and conformal invariance are predominant themes in dimension $d=2$,and mean-field behaviour and the lace expansion are important in high dimensions.

Recent joint work with R.~Bauerschmidt for self-avoiding walk and spin models in dimension $d=4$, which uses a rigorous implementation of Wilson's renormalisation group method to prove the existence of logarithmic corrections to mean-field scaling, will be introduced in the course. The application of the method to the self-avoiding walk makes use of a functional integral representation involving anti-commuting(fermionic) variables. This representation will be discussed in the course;such representations are becoming increasingly useful in probability theory.

The level of the course will be suitable for
graduate students in probability without previous background in statistical mechanics;the course will provide the necessary background and will not assume specialised knowledge.

2. Lectures by Tadahisa FUNAKI (President of the Mathematical Society of Japan)

(1) Effective interface model: Assuming that the interface is described as a height function measured from a fixed reference plane disretized in space, the system is described by the energy called Hamiltonian of the height function. Static and dynamic theories are developed for this model. One possible topic to be discussed in my course is the scaling limit for Gaussian random fields with a weak pinning effect under the situation that the rate functional of the large deviation principle corresponding to this scaling limit admits non-unique minimizers.

(2) Dynamics of two-dimensional Young diagrams: If the value of the height function is also discrete and monotone, then it forms a Young diagram. We can define dynamics of Young diagrams in a natural way and study its hydrodynamic behavior and fluctuations.

(3) Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation: KPZ equation describes a fluctuation of interfaces, and recently attracts a lot of attentions. This is a kind of stochastic partial differential equation which involves a divergent term. I will discuss the invariant measures of this equation.

(4) Sharp interface limit for stochastic Allen-Cahn equations: Sharp interface limit for the Allen-Cahn equation, that is a reaction-diffusion equation with bistable reaction term, leads to a motion of mean curvature for the interface. I will discuss its stochastic perturbation, especially the effect of the stochastic term in the limit.

Title: Combinatorics around two extensions of Hermite polynomials

Abstract
We will highlight two examples of the interplay of combinatorics and
orthogonal polynomials by considering two recent one-parameter extensions of Hermite polynomials:
a curious q-analog in connection with q-Weyl algebra and the 2D-Hermite polynomials.
As application we derive a generalization of Touchard-Riordan formula for
crossings of chords joining pairs of 2n points on a circle and a new Kibble-Slepian type
formula for the 2D-Hermite polynomials, which extends the Poisson kernel for these polynomials.

2014년도 세계 수학자 대회 ICM 개최 이후, 한국은 수학의 연구와 교육에 있어서 전세계의 중심국가 중 하나로서의 위치를 공고히 하는 것이 중요한 과제로 떠오를 것이다. 우리는 국제적으로 연구 학교 (research school)을 개최함으로서 그 과제에 기여하려고 한다.
본 연구 학교의 목적은 수학 연구를 시작하는 대학원 초년생 혹은 학부 4학년 학생들에게 구체적인 예들을 통해, 현대 수학의 큰 세부분야인 동역학계의 연구 방법론과 현대 기하학의 문제들을 소개하고 친숙해 지도록 하는데 있다.
천체 물체들의 운동을 이해하는 것은 인류의 오랜 꿈이다. 케플러 이래 2-체 문제 (two body problem)는 완전히 풀렸지만, 3-체 문제는 모든 시간에 대해 기술하는 닫힌 방정식을 찾는 것이 불가능하다. 포앙카레의 결과로 우리는 3-체 문제가 아주 작은 섭동에 대해 큰 혼돈 (choas)이 야기된다는 것을 알게 되었다. 하지만 포앙카레는 주기적인 궤도가 해밀톤 시스템의 동역학의 기본이됨을 발견하였다.
이렇든 3-체 문제는 역사가 긴 문제이지만, 최근의 사교기하학의 현대적인 방법론이 대두되면서,다시 각광을 받게 되었다. 그로모프의 (pseudo-holomorphic curves)의 도입으로 사교 위상수학은 우리의 해밀톤 동역학의 이해에 혁명적인 변화를 일으켰다. 이에 플로어 호몰로지(Floerhomology), 사교 장 이로, 푸카야 A-무한 (A-infinity) 카테고리 등의 중요한 개념들의 발견이 뒤따랐다. 제한된 3-체 문제의 분석에 있어서의 최근의 발전은, 본 연구 학교의 강연자 및 주관자 중 두 명이 활발히 관여한 연구인데, 이러한 새로운 광역적인 방법론이, 섭동(perturbation)이라는 국소적인 방법론과는 완전히 새로운 접근법을 가져다 주는지 보여주었다.
우리는 기하학과 동역학을 구체적인 예를 통해 소개하고 그 둘 사이의 상호작용을 강조함으로써,학생들이 두 이론을 각각 이해할 뿐만 아니라 서로 다른 수학적 이론들이 상호작용하고 서로를 풍부하게 해주는 지를 보게 될 것으로 기대한다. 또한 우리의 강의들은 간단하고 추상적인 개념들이 어떻게 응용되는지를 보여줄 것이다.

Conference Information
본 연구 학교의 목표는 학생들에게 동역학계의 기본적인 질문들과 이를 해결하기 위해 필요한 이론들을 구체적인 문제들을 통해 소개하는 것이다.
우리의 기본적인 질문들은 다음과 같다 : 닫힌 궤도의 존재성 (existence of closed orbits), 적분성(integrability 완전 해결성 complete solvability), 안정성 (stability). 그리고 우리의 기본적인 방법들은 다음과 같다 : 기하화 (geometrization)와 variational principles.이러한 질문과 방법들을 다음과 같은 구체적인 예들에 대해 적용하고자 한다 : 빌리어드 billiards, 측지선 흐름과 자기적 흐름 geodesic and magnetic flows, 그리고 3체 문제 3-body problem. 또다른 목적은 이러한 질문과 방법들, 그리고 예들이 무미건조한 추상적인 수학이 아닌, 역학, 기하학적 광학, 천체물리학 등에 등장하는 구체적인 예들과 질문들임을 보여주려고 한다.

Spectral theory of Neumann-Poincare Operator and applications

Abstract

The Neumann-Poincare (NP) operator is a boundary integral operator which arises naturally when solving boundary value problems using layer potentials. It is not self-adjoint with the usual inner product. But it can symmetrized by introducing a new inner product on H−1/2 spaces using Plemelj's symmetrizationprinciple. Recently many nteresting spectral properties of the NP operator have been discovered. I will discuss about this development and various applications including solvability of PDEs with complex coefficients and plasmonicresonance.
