An Introduction to Industrial Mathematics

▩ Industrial mathematics is a term used to describe a broad range of applied mathematics topics, with the common factor that the work is motivated by some problem of practical interest. In this talk I will give a brief introduction to industrial mathematics and then illustrate it with three more detailed examples.

▩ Football motion through the air. This project came from a question posed by a South African premiership team. Simply put the question was, can we choose a football that will disadvantage a visiting team. The answer was yes and the teams results improved significantly after this work was completed.

▩ Phase change. The mathematical deion of the change of phase of a substance, for example from liquid to solid, is well established. However, in certain situations the standard formulations break down. I will describe our recent work on the melting of nanoparticles and solidification of a supercooled liquid.

▩ Flow in carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes are viewed as one of the most exciting new materials with applications in electronics, optics, materials science and architecture. One unusual property is that liquid flows through nanotubes have been observed up to five orders of magnitude faster than predicted by classical fluid dynamics. I will describe a model for fluid flow in a CNT and show that the theoretical limit is closer to 50 times the classical value. This result is in keeping with later experimental and molecular dynamics papers.

□ 제목 : Introduction for the application of mathematics to understand complex biological systems

 

 The revolution of molecular biology in the early 1980s has revealed complex network of non-linear and stochastic biochemical interactions underlying biological systems. To understand this complex system, mathematical modeling has been widely used.
 In this talk, I will introduce the typical process of applying mathematical models to biological systems including mathematical representation of biological systems, model fitting to data, analysis and simulations, and experimental validation. I will also describe our efforts to develop and integrate mathematical tools across the different steps of the modeling process. 

 Finally, I will discuss the shortcomings of our present approach and how they point to the parts of current toolbox of mathematical biology that need further mathematical development.

All sessions will be held at National Institute for Mathematical Sciences and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.  

The purpose of the SIAM Activity Group in Algebraic Geometry is to bring together researchers who use algebraic geometry in industrial and applied mathematics. "Algebraic geometry" is interpreted broadly to include at least: algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, noncommutative algebra, symbolic and numeric computation, algebraic and geometric combinatorics, representation theory, and algebraic topology. 

These methods have already seen applications in: biology, coding theory, cryptography, combustion, computational geometry, computer graphics, quantum computing, control theory, geometric design, complexity theory, machine learning, nonlinear partial differential equations, optimization, robotics, and statistics.

We welcome participation from both theoretical mathematical areas and application areas not on this list which fall under this broadly interpreted notion of algebraic geometry and its applications.

 ■ 제목 : Neutron Scattering and Mathematics : How difficult an experimental physicist's life has become

      

 한국원자력연구원의 박승일 박사님을 모셔서 강연을 들은 후 Mathematica와 같은 수학 소프트웨어의 활용에 관한 이야기를 나누어 봅니다.

Neutron scattering is an experimental tool employed by condensed matter physicists.

In the first part, I will introduce neutron scattering and present the status of the neutron scattering facility at HANARO, the research reactor located in Daejeon. In the second part, I will show the traditional approach neutron scatterers use to 'calculate' the experimental result and how the fast-paced change in theoretical and experimental landscape challenges average experimental physicists these days. This leads to the conclusion that intuitive mathematical software would be much appreciated even by simple-minded experimental physicists.

본 동서양 수학사 여름학교는 대학교수, 연구원, 학생, 그리고 중등교사를 포함한 참가자들에게 동서양수학사에 대한 정보교류, 연구교류, 인력교류 등을 감안한 동양수학사의 소개와 서양수학의 일정 분야에 대한 소개를 목표로 한다. 특히 2014년 수학사 여름학교의 개최는 매우 성공적이었는데, 참가자들은 여름학교의 성공 이유로 두 가지를 꼽았다. 하나는 동양수학사로 ‘우리의 수학이 있음’을 지적하였고, 다른 하나는 서양수학사로 ‘현대 수학의 한 분야와 주제에 대한 일관된 소개와 설명’이었다. 특히 동서양의 ‘방정식론’에 대한 비교는 참가자들의 우리나라의 수학문화에 대한 자긍심을 고취시키기에 충분하였다. 또한 서양 방정식론의 역사는 현대 대수학의 현재의 모습이 왜 그러한 형태를 갖추게 되는지에 대한 이해를 도모함으로써 참가자들의 수학에 대한 관심을 고조시켰다.

이번의 2015년 수학사 여름학교도 공히 동양수학사와 서양수학사를 다룬다. 동양수학의 경우,그 근간은 ‘구장산술’(The Nine Chapters on Mathematical Art)에 있다. 신기하게도 세종대왕께서 훈민정음을 제정하였음에도 불구하고 조선시대 대부분의 서적은 한자로 기록되었다. 산학서도 마찬가지로 한자로 쓰였다. 그러므로 동양산학 및 수학사를 연구하기 위해서는 한문, 특히 고대에 사용되었던 한문을 읽을 수 있어야 한다. 그의 모태가 되는 표본이 ‘구장산술’이기에 ‘구장산술’의 소개를 이번 수학사 여름학교의 동양수학사의 주제로 설정하였다.
구장산술은 한나라 때 유휘가 주를 입힌 책으로 3세기경에 출간되었다. 구장산술은 9개의 장으로 구성되었으며, 특히 7장 영부족장, 8장 방정장, 9장 구고장 등은 당시의 수학이 체계화되어가는 과정을 엿볼 수 있게 한다. 실제 조선에 구장산술이 유입된 것은 18세기 이후인데, 그럼에도 불구하고 양휘산법과 산학계몽 등이 구장산술을 근간으로 하여 저술된 책이기에 조선산학에도 구장산술의 영향은 여실히 나타난다.이번 여름학교의 동양수학사의 주제인 구장산술과 그의 수학(산학)에 대한 소개는 구장산술의 각 장의 중요 문제와 관련 수학 이론을 설명한 한문으로 쓰인 원문을 해석하며 수학을 설명하는 것으로 진행한다. 이러한 시도는 한문으로 쓰인 우리문화, 특히 수학문화에 대한 이해를 도모하고 우리문화를 연구할 인력의 유입을 유도하는 한편, 한국수학사의 정리를 위한 출발점을 제시한다. 본 수학사 여름학교의 서양수학사의 주제로는 ‘타원곡선’(elliptic curve)을 꼽았다. Keith Deblin의 책 The Millenium Problems에서도 언급되었듯이 ‘타원곡선’은 현대 수학의 거의 모든 분야에서 나타난다. 정수론, 복소해석학, 기하학, 암호학 등 관련 분야뿐만 아니라 응용도 매우 다양하다. 특히 교통카드와 같은 스마트카드에 가장 많이 이용하는 암호로 ECC(elliptic curve cryptosystem)가 있는데 이는 타원곡선 이론을 이용한 암호체계이다.
주제를 타원곡선으로 설정함은 매우 시의 적절한 선택이기도 하다. 실제 타원곡선의역사는 디오판투스 시대로 거슬러 올라가지만 타원곡선에 대한 관심의 고조는 1901년 포앙카레에 의한 타원곡선 상에서의 유리점들에 의한 군(group)의 체계에 대한 주장부터이다. 타원곡선 이론은 방정식론과 연계가 있다고 보아도 무방하다. 왜냐하면 y=f(x)로 주어지는 함수식에서 f(x)가 3차 다항식이라 하고, y 대신 y 제곱을 대입하면 그것이 타원곡선을 정의하기 때문이다. 타원곡선을 소개한 많은 책들이 언급하고 있듯이 타원곡선은 실제로 타원이 아니다. 그러나 함수의 적분을 연구하던 중에 ‘타원적분’을 연구하게 되었는데 그로 인하여 얻게 된 이름이 타원곡선인 것이다. 타원곡선은 서양에서는 매우 많이, 매우 다양하게 연구되고 있다. 실제 타원곡선을 다룬 수학 전문서적은 상당히 많이 나와 있다. 대표적으로는 Silvermann의 Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves가 있고, Husemoller나 Koblitz, Milne 등의 많은 수학자들의 저서도 정말 많이 찾을 수 있다. 타원곡선에 관련된 논문은 수 없이 많다. 우리나라에서도 1999년 양재현 교수가 대한수학회 학술지(Communications of Korean Mathematical Society 14 (No. 3), 449-477)에 ‘타원곡선에 관한 지난 20년 간의 연구 동향’이란 제목으로 논문을 발표하였다. 이 논문에 언급된 참고문헌만 해도 40개 이상이다.
그러나 타원곡선이 시의 적절한 주제임은 2014년 서울에서 개최된 ICM에서 Fields 상을 수상한 Manjul Bhargava의 연구주제이기도 하기 때문이다. Bhargava의 필즈상의 수상 기념 발표는 1998년에 필즈상을 수상한 영국 수학자 T. Gowers가 칭찬을 아끼지 않은 정말 훌륭한 발표였다. 아마 ICM-2014에서 그의 발표를 들은 사람은 누구나 Gowers의 평가를 인정할 것이다. 심지어 타원곡선 이론은 Hilbert의 그 유명한 23문제 중에 아직도 해결되지 않은 Riemann 가설과도 연결고리를 가지고 있다.
바로 제타함수가 그것이다. 또한 타원곡선은 1996년 Andrew Wiles (그리고 Taylor)에 의한 Fermat의 마지막 정리의 증명에 사용되었던 Taniyama-Shimura 추측과도 관련된다. 더 나아가 Clay Math Institute에서 제시한 백만불 상금의 Millenium Problem 중 하나인 Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer 추측이 타원곡선에 대한 문제이다. 특히 Bhargava의 연구 업적이 Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer 추측의 해결을 위한 연구였던 것이다. 이러한 점에서 수학자들은 대부분 타원곡선에 흥미를 느낄 것이다. 또한 2013년 11월에 고등과학원이 개소한 수학난제연구센터(CMC,Center for Mathematical Challengers)의 설립 취지인 세계 7대 난제인 Millenium Problems와 그에 관련된 수학의 미해결 고유 난제와 전략난제 등의 연구에도 일맥상통한다.
하지만 본 수학사 여름학교가 타원곡선과 관련된 난제의 해결을 목표로 하는 것은 아니다. 그러나 수학사의 관점에서 타원곡선에 대한 수학적, 수학사적 개요 정보를 제공하려 함을 목표로 한다. Millenium Problems를 소개한 책과 논문에서도 타원곡선을 소개하고 있지만 그러한 소개는 그 분야를 전공으로 하는 수학자가 아니면 이해하기 어렵다. 본 여름학교는 Avner Ash가 저술한 Elliptic Tales (Princeton University Press, 2012)와 같은 수준의 타원곡선과 관련된 수학사 및 수학의 기본 이론 등을 소개함을 목표로 한다. 보다 구체적으로는 다음에 열거한 내용을 포함해 타원곡선과 관련된 역사적 내용과 중요 문제들을 설명한다.

이러한 수학사 여름학교의 동서양 수학사의 소개는 많은 사람들이 수학을 공감하고 이해하는 계기를 제시할 것이며 낮게는 수학문화의 창출에 기여하고, 높게는 수학을 연구하기 위해 수학계에 삶을 던져 넣을 연구 인력의 유입을 도모할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 그로 인하여 우리나라의 수학 발전과 수학문화의 창출, 그리고 그로 인한 국가의 발전에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

■ Title: Cech cohomology of Semiring schemes

■ Abstract: A semiring scheme generalizes a scheme in such a way that the underlying algebra is that of semirings. We generalize Cech cohomology theory and invertible sheaves to semiring schemes. In particular, when X is a projective space over a totally ordered idempotent semifield M, we show that cohomology semimodules vanish as in the classical computation for all n. Finally, we classify all invertible sheaves on X by computing Pic(X) explicitly.

제목: Extremal Positive Semidefinite Matrices for Weakly Bipartite Graphs

For a graph $G$ with $p$ vertices the cone of concentration matrices consists of all real positive semidefinite $p\times p$ matrices with zeros in the off-diagonal entries corresponding to nonedges of~$G$. 

The extremal rays of this cone and their associated ranks have applications to matrix completion problems, maximum likelihood estimation in Gaussian graphical models in statistics, and Gauss elimination for sparse matrices. 

For a weakly bipartite graph $G$, we show that the normal vectors to the facets of the $(\pm1)$- polytope of $G$ specify the off-diagonal entries of extremal matrices in $\K_G$. 

We also prove that the constant term of the linear equation of each facet-supporting hyperplane is the rank of its corresponding extremal matrix in $\K_G$.

Furthermore, we show that if $G$ is series-parallel then this gives a complete characterization of all possible extremal ranks of $\K_G$, consequently solving the sparsity order problem for series-parallel graphs.  This is joint work with Liam Solus and Caroline Uhler.
