The National Institute for Mathematical Sciences connects mathematicians, scientists, and engineers in order to work on a national agenda to secure national competitiveness as leading mathematical research institute, provide a mathematical solution which industry needs to develop founding technology and a collaborative and engage-able environment as mathematical sciences research hub, and disseminate mathematical knowledge, while training the next generation researchers.
The NIMS: Research into mathematical sciences centered on future technology
Founded in 2005, the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (NIMS) had been established as a part of the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI). In 2012, NIMS jointed to the Institute for Basic Science (IBS). Currently located at the Korea Telecommunication (KT) II Research Center.
The NIMS is a leading mathematical sciences research institute in the Korea. The NIMS focuses on three key functional features. First, NIMS's researches are focused on few national agenda areas; for examples, Big Data, Optimization, and Bio Mathematics. Second, NIMS achieves synergy among many different mathematical sciences research areas. Third, NIMS aims to develop transformative mathematical research through interdisciplinary exploration and effectively communicate the role of mathematics in our world.
The Open Research Program (ORP), the antecedent of Projects on Applications of Mathematical Principles, was established in 2009 to promote research exchanges among mathematicians and scientists across the world. From 2009 to 2012, ORP invited 15 well-known leading researchers, organized 59 international workshops, 22 summer/winter schools, 63 public lectures and published 34 research papers through its 'Hot Topics Project' and 'Hub-type Research Project'.
In 2013, NIMS launched the Center for Applications of Mathematical Principles (CAMP) to promote research collaboration among mathematician, scientists, and researchers from industry and to recognize and solve the problems that our society is now facing through mathematics. CAMP aims to become an international research hub for mathematical sciences where people can share and discuss their researches to create new technologies, transform industries and solve important problems.
In nearly 10 years, the NIMS provide an environment to support mathematical sciences community. NIMS will continuously provide an engaging environment conducive to multidisciplinary collaboration and research.
