In this talk, I will present several mathematical modeling instances employing gradient flows and associated numerical schemes for its fundamental equations. A gradient flow is a curve that follows the steepest descent direction of a function within a metric space. It has been a valuable tool in the analysis of ODEs and PDEs. Recently, gradient flows under various distances have also been emerged for potential use in machine learning or generative modelling. Given that the solution of gradient flows can be expressed as the minimization of an energy functional that is lower semi-continuous and bounded below, the development of a numerical method ensuring energy dissapation or energy non-increasing, commonly referred to as an unconditionally (energy) gradient stable scheme, becomes a critical consideration. For a practical demenstration of the numerical method, the Allen-Cahn and Cahn-Hilliard equations will be employed as examples.

4. 주요내용: Understanding adversarial robustness via optimal transport perspective: theory and numeric

In this talk, I will present the recent progress of understanding adversarial multiclass classification problems, motivated by the empirical observation of the sensitivity of neural networks by small adversarial attacks. Based on 'distributional robust optimization' framework, we obtain reformulations of adversarial training problem: 'generalized barycenter problem' and a family of multimarginal optimal transport problems. These new theoretical results reveal a rich geometric structure of adversarial training problems in multiclass classification and extend recent results restricted to the binary classification setting. From this optimal transport perspective understanding, we prove the existence of robust classifiers by using the duality of the reformulations. Furthermore, based on these optimal transport reformulations, we provide two efficient approximate methods which provide a lower bound of the optimal adversarial risk. The basic idea is the truncation of effective interactions between classes: with small adversarial budget, high-order interactions(high-order barycenters) disappear, which helps consider only lower order tensor computations.

   블록체인은 중앙 서버 없이 안전한 운영을 가능하게 하는 시스템으로, 모든 거래를 공개하고 모든 노드가 각각 검증합니다. 그러나 이러한 설계 사상으로 인해 본질적으로 거래의 프라이버시와 확장성 측면에서 일부 한계를 가지고 있습니다. 최근에는 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위해 영지식 증명 (Zero-Knowledge Proofs) 및 계산 검증 (Verifiable Computation) 암호학 기법을 활용하는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있으며, 이에 따라 암호학 분야에서도 많은 연구 결과가 발표되고 있습니다. 본 강연에서는 영지식 증명 및 계산 검증 기법을 활용한 블록체인 연구 트렌드에 대해 다룹니다. 이 트렌드는 크게 시기에 따라 세 가지 주제로 나눌 수 있으며, 각 주제에 따라 블록체인이 직면한 문제와 해결책을 간략히 설명하고 해당 분야의 최신 연구 결과를 소개합니다.

6. Rollup (Layer 2): 블록체인은 빠른 거래 처리를 위해 확장성 문제에 직면합니다. 이를 극복하기 위해 계산 검증 기법을 사용하여 일부 거래 처리를 오프 체인으로 옮기는 연구가 진행되고 있고, 이를 통해 블록체인 네트워크의 성능을 향상시킬 수 있습니다.

   본 강연에서는 AI가 시각데이터를 처리하는 과정에 쓰이는 다양한 테크닉과 그 배경의 수학 이론에 대하여 설명을 하겠습니다. 로봇이나 자율 주행 등에서 AI가 현실 세계와 상호작용을 하기 위해서는 시각 데이터를 수집하고 이를 3D로 정확하게 스케일까지 이해하는 것이 필요한데, 이러한 3D 비젼의 기본적인 수학 이론, 특히 사영기하학 (projective geometry)을 이용한 이론 체계 및 계산 방법에 대하여 설명하고, 왜곡 교정 및 영상 분석 등 우리 생활에 두루 쓰이는 기본적인 응용에 대하여 소개하기로 합니다. 좀 더 고도의 대수기하학은 3D 영상 재구성의 이론과 실제 계산의 양 영역에서 중요한 역할을 하는데, 특히 epipolar 기하학 및 Nister의 5점 알고리즘에 대하여 설명하겠습니다. 최근에는 딥러닝의 3D 영상 재구성의 여러 요소에 쓰이기 시작하였고, 생성형 AI를 통한 3D 영상도 크게 주목 받고 있습니다. 이 중, 로봇의 움직임 등 수많은 응용의 기초가 되는 점구름 짜깁기(point cloud registration)에 대하여 설명하고, 최근 크게 주목을 받고 있는 생성형 3D 비젼 AI인 Neural Radiance Field 기법에 대하여 소개하겠습니다.

   대규모언어모델(Large-scale Language Model; LLM)을 통한 생성인공지능분야의 혁신이 학계, 언론, 대중의 관심을 끌고 있습니다. OpenAI가 일반인공지능(Artificial General Intelligence;AGI)를 내놓고, 이를 촉매로 많은 경쟁조직들이 그동안 연구해 놓았던 것을 경쟁적으로 공개하고 있습니다. 이는 2017년에 Google 연구진에 의해서 제안된 소위 트랜스포머1라는 기술에 기반하고 있습니다. 최근 chatGPT와 GPT4가 일반에게 충격을 주고 있지만, GPT 뿐 아니라 다양한 GPT, BERT, Chinchilla, Gopher, Bloom, MT-NLG, PaLM, LaMDA 모델 등이 공개되고 테스트할 수 있습니다. 소설을 쓰고, 데이터 처리, 시각화를 위한 컴퓨터 프로그램을 작성하고, 외국어를 번역하고, 미래를 추측할 수 있는 이러한 일반화된 대규모언어모델의 능력은 인류에게 처음으로 일반인공지능에 접근하고 있다는 생각을 들게 했습니다.2 특히, 대규모언어모델이 인간이 작성한 문장을 고도의 추상적 레벨에서 해석하고, 이를 잠재공간에 mapping 할수 있다는 뜻이 되기 때문에, 이에 따라서 다양한 의료응용이 가능할 것으로 사료됩니다. 대규모언어모델은 의료 진단, 치료 및 임상/의학연구의 효율성을 개선하여 의료 및 의료 산업을 혁신할 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있습니다.3-8 하지만, 대규모언어모델은 언어로만 만들어서 환각이 강화되거나, 현실과 관계를 맺지 않아서 사실에 대한 개념이 없다는 점, 의학이 발전하기 때문에, 이를 맞추어 연속학습(continual learning)기반의 fine-tuning이 필요 등 다양한 한계도 가지고 있습니다. 최근에 이런 문제를 해결하기 위해서 시각이나 비디오를 같이 학습하는 대규모멀티모달모델(Large-scale Multimodal Model; LMM)이 나오고 있고, 괄목할만한 성장을 하고 있습니다. 반대로, 대규모언어모델을 이용한 프로그램은 전문가 수준은 아직 아니지만, 프로그램에 익숙하지 않은 임상 의사나 초급 개발자들에게는 협력 개발자나 좋은 tutor가 될수 있는 수준이라고 생각합니다. 이를 잘 활용하면, 기존처럼 도메인지식을 가장 잘 알고 있는 의사가 의료인공지능 연구 및 개발에 소외되고 단순 레이블러나, 평가자만 되는 상황에서 벋어나서, 의료인공지능 연구 개발의 주체가 될수 있을것으로 사료됩니다. 또한, 실제 임상 진료에서 LMM 등이 활발하게 적용될것이라 생각되고 사례를 살펴보겠습니다.

4. 주요내용: A Human-like Neural Tactile Sensing and Perception System

The human finger is the most sensitive tactile sensor, and the engineering realization of human tactile perception mechanism is a key technology of the future virtual reality world in which the tactile sense is synchronized. Human skin can detect physical stimuli including pressure and vibration sensitively and selectively through different types of cutaneous mechanoreceptors. In biological sensory systems, tactile stimuli are converted to action potentials through somatosensory transduction and the resulting signals are transmitted via afferent nerves. While slow adaptive (SA) mechanoreceptors generate voltage spikes in different rates and patterns depending on the strength of the sustained stimulus such as static pressure, fast adaptive (FA) mechanoreceptors generate most voltage spikes at initial contact and final release of physical stimuli due to their vibration-sensitive characteristics. These signals are delivered separately, and then integrated for multi-level information on tactile perception in the brain. There have been attempts to mimic the complex human tactile perception systems and implement them engineeringly, however, constructing such systems with human-like capabilities remains challenging. In this talk, I will introduce a method for designing a tactile sensor that mimics the function of human tactile mechanoreceptors and discuss a core idea for mechanically or electrically stimulating the skin to deliver realistic tactile information to the central nervous system. Finally, I will suggest that authoring tactile signals for each object is essential for implementing tactile interfaces in electronic communication devices.

Over the past few decades, optimal transport theory has gained increasing interest across multiple fields, including partial differential equations, probability, and machine learning. In this talk, we explore the diverse applications of optimal transport theory within various machine learning problems, with a specific focus on generative models. Our discussion begins by examining gradient flows in the space of probability measures equipped with the distance arising from the Monge-Kantorovich optimal transport problem. We then analyze a score-based generative model based on the Fokker-Planck equations that underlie both the forward and reverse processes of the model. Additional discussions about De Giorgi's minimizing ments and Wasserstein dictionary learning will be provided.
